National Golf Meeting 2015

On Monday 22 June, 44 GCMA members from across the country teed it up for our annual National Golf Meeting, held this year at Beau Desert GC.

Though many players were tackling the Staffordshire venue’s notorious greens for the first time, scoring was competitive and once back in the clubhouse, many players paid compliments to the course, which was in fantastic condition.

With Summer apparently on hold for the day, the early starters had to contend with chilly conditions, some showers and a stiff breeze, which continued to blow through all day. The sun broke through by lunchtime though, and some solid early scores were posted. Unfortunately for the rest of the field, last year’s GCMA Captain, John Smith, was having “a decent round”, and posted a 74 (nett 66) to win both The Founders Cup (nett) and Greenshield Memorial Trophy (gross)!

Louis Matamala, 2014 winner of the Greenshield Memorial Trophy, shot a very creditable gross 79 to try to retain the trophy, but managed only 3rd place behind John Cox who shot gross 76.

The winners on the day were:

NTP in 2: 9th John Cox Rye Hill GC

NTP 10th Keith Anderson Merthyr Tydfil GC

NTP 16th Clive Hadley Copt Heath GC

Greenshield Memorial Trophy:

1st John Smith Highwoods GC Gross 74

2nd John Cox Rye Hill GC Gross 76

3rd  Louis Matamala Hertfordshire GU Gross 79

The Founders Cup:

1st  John Smith Highwoods GC Net 66

2nd  Geoff Butterfield Burnley GC Net 72

3rd  Clive Hadley Copt Heath GC Net 73

4th  Howard Till North Middlesex GC Net 75

Congratulations to all the winners and for the excellent event that was hosted by Steve Mainwaring and his team at Beau Desert GC, Cannock.

Thanks also go to Philip Holder of Club Systems who supported the day by running the competitions leaderboard and to On-Course Foundation’s Shay Vaugh and Mark Schorah who helped with the registration and starting.

The 2016 National Golf Day will take place on Monday 20 June at Alwoodley GC.
