Photography Case Study: Windernesse

With a redesigned website, which features prominent images throughout, Wildernesse were delighted with the results when they decided to hire a specialist golf course photographer. The Kent club called in Andy Hiseman for a series of high quality images they could use to market the club and show off their new clubhouse development. Tom Scott, Wildernesse deputy secretary, outlines what was involved… Why did you decide to hire a golf course photographer? Our existing catalogue of photographs had been compiled over a number of years, via varying sources. There was no continuity in the photos and they lacked the quality required to maximise the impact of high resolution screens and devices. We had also recently redeveloped a large portion of the clubhouse, so this needed capturing for use in any future marketing material. Were there any budgetary considerations involved? Yes, as with all expenditure we needed to ensure we received value for money. The previous catalogue contained mainly member taken photographs, but we agreed we needed a professional with the correct equipment from the outset. What did you have to do to prepare? We booked the shoot at a time of the year that we knew the course would be photogenic and pre-warned the greenkeeping staff. They worked tirelessly to ensure the course was at its most presentable and avoided any major or disruptive practices. How did it go on the day? The shoot spanned a couple of days, to allow for varying light and weather conditions. The majority of the on course photos were taken early in the morning or into the evening, which gave the moody light setting. We were able to work around the bookings over the days and provide time to set up the clubhouse in varying formats. How satisfied were you with the experience? Andy is clearly an experienced photographer and was able to advise us accordingly. He worked independently and turned around the photographs promptly. As a golfer himself, Andy was able to suggest the requirements and understood that the business must continue to operate. How have you used the images? The images have created a main base for our redesigned website (wildernesse.co.uk), which is based on visual imagery rather than text. We have also used a selection of the images within the lobby of the clubhouse. What was the reaction from members and visitors? Positive. Our members are extremely proud of their course, so they like to see it captured so well. THE PHOTOGRAPHER’S VIEW Andy Hiseman said: “They prepared the course immaculately. Almost every hole gave me a beautiful shot that wouldn’t have looked out of place on a calendar. “It is quite a naturally photogenic place and I could see when I got there the care they had taken and the results really showed. I had a very high percentage of course shots that were keepers at Wildernesse.”
