Committee for Golf Club Salaries publishes 2025 Salary Recommendations

The CGCS and GCMA have issued an update on the committee’s recommendations for 2025.

Since the last recommendations at the start of 2024, we have seen general inflation and wage inflation steadily decrease throughout the year. In general, it is understood that the majority of UK golf facilities are still thriving following the post-pandemic increase in participation. However, the general economic situation, particularly as it affects operating costs, is a concern for the whole industry.

There is widespread acceptance that the ongoing success of the sport is in no small part due to the excellent work of the golf industry workforce. However, staff recruitment remains a challenge for many facilities, as is the ongoing issue of staff retention. Above-inflation increases to the National Living Wage (NLW) continue to put pressure on club finances and wage structures.

The Committee strongly considered the above issues as well as the data below before reaching their Recommendations for 2025 Salaries.

 National Living Wage 2025 The National Living Wage is forecast to rise by 5.8% in 2025 to £12.10 per hour


There is no doubt that NLW is putting pressure on to golf facility wage structures. The gap between NLW and salaries for existing staff, particularly those with some level of supervisory or department level responsibility, is in danger of being further reduced. The committee therefore strongly recommend that golf facilities give serious consideration to ensuring that such staff are suitably rewarded such that they are not continually “caught up” by those on the NLW. It is imperative that experienced staff members who bring so much to facilities feel valued if they are to be retained.

Overall, based on the data above, the prevailing economic environment and the importance of golf facility staff to the overall industry, the Committee recommends an overall wage increase of 5% for 2025. The decisions on any salary related matters are of course entirely down to the individual golf facility to make and it is vital that employee reward and retention is given balanced consideration alongside affordability and financial health for the business.

This figure will be applied to the salary calculators provided on the CGCS website www.golfclubsalaries.org.uk at the end of this year.

At this time the Committee is conducting research to enable it to create calculators for further key golf facility roles including Assistant Manager and Equipment Manager/Chief Mechanic.

As in previous years, the Committee wishes to state that the Recommendations are exactly that, recommendations, to ensure that golf facility staff are suitably paid and valued by their employers in today’s turbulent environment. An environment in which securing new and competent staff is becoming ever more difficult.

Alongside salaries, Golf Clubs are urged to ensure that suitable attention, provision and resource is given towards the growing concern that is employee mental health and wellbeing, as well as providing adequate opportunities for career pathway support, training and development. John Steele


John Steele is a former professional athlete, sports coach, Olympic Leader and is the Executive Director of Sport at Loughborough University. He has been Chief Executive across a range of sectors. Drawing on leadership experience of nine different Olympic and Paralympic Games (including the amazing events at the Rio Games), John reflects on the lessons from this unique period in British sport and relays his fascinating views on creating high performing teams.

John moved into the corporate world, before he enjoyed an outstanding career as a professional rugby player achieving international honours. Post-London 2012, with the Olympic legacy in place and an obligation to continue inspiring a generation, John took up his post as Group Chief Executive of the Youth Sport Trust. He has also succeeded Steve Cram as Chairman of the English Institute of Sport, an organisation described as ‘the team behind the team’, which delivers a range of performance impacting solutions to over 40 Olympic and Paralympic sports and some non-Olympic sports.

Dr Jo Salter MBE


Dr Jo Salter MBE is famed for becoming the first female fast jet pilot, having flown the Panavia Tornado ground attack aircraft during her services in the Royal Air Force. Joining the RAF aged 18, Jo has since taken Air Cadets into the skies as part of Air Experience Flights, become the Director of Global Transformative Leadership for PWC, and most recently become a Global Advisory of GenAI for PwC.

Jo is a passionate Trustee of The Royal Air Force Club and an Ambassador of the Global Angels charity, an organisation that gives communities around the world access to clean water, education, healthcare and encourages female and youth empowerment. Colin MacLachlan


Colin Maclachlan, star of Channel Four's captivating reality TV drama SAS: Who Dares Wins and Channel 5’s ‘Secrets of the SAS’, is an operator with over 25 years of security and risk related experience who is a popular and frequent fixture on the speaking circuit.

Colin Maclachlan, celebrated for his roles on Channel Four's SAS: Who Dares Wins and Channel 5’s Secrets of the SAS, brings over three decades of expertise in security and risk management. Colin's military career began in 1989, and after serving nine years with the Royal Scots, he joined the elite 22 SAS at just 23. His time in the SAS saw him participating in numerous high-stakes operations, including the notable rescue of hostages from the West Side Boys in Sierra Leone—a mission so perilous it was dubbed Operation Certain Death.

Colin was also pivotal during the longest hostage siege on UK soil, when a hijacked Afghan plane landed in London in 2000. The standoff lasted four days with Colin as the first sniper on the scene.
