The South West Region of the GCMA hosted a highly successful Leadership Event last week at The Bristol Golf Club, bringing together over 30 managers and industry professionals for a day of education, insight and discussion.
The programme included two engaging sessions from Kevin Fish of CCL Ltd, who shared his expertise on how to present a professional proposal to a club owner or voluntary board. Kevin highlighted the importance of soft skills in the early stages of engagement, helping managers make proposals desirable to decision-makers before moving into the structure of a full, formal presentation.
Delegates then heard from GCMA CEO Tom Brooke, who delivered a thought-provoking presentation on the theme of being “Future Ready”. His session explored what this concept means in a rapidly evolving golf landscape, and the role of managers in ensuring their clubs are prepared to adapt and thrive.
The morning continued with a panel discussion on key industry topics, chaired by Leighton Walker of the Golf Club Talk UK podcast. The panel featured the CEOs of both BIGGA and the GCMA, alongside two representatives from England Golf. The discussion was lively and insightful, providing attendees with a broad view of the challenges and opportunities currently facing the game.

After lunch, attention turned to innovation in course management with an in-depth look at robotic mowers. Chloe Boissell-Marshall from Tidworth Garrison Golf Club shared her club’s journey in assessing whether robotics were the right fit, and the thorough consultation process undertaken with members before gaining approval at a General Meeting.
The day concluded with an energetic and practical workshop from Sam Poole of Aquila, who demonstrated how AI tools can free up time for managers by streamlining administrative tasks. This session sparked plenty of discussion about how technology could further support the role of the modern golf club manager.
Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with delegates praising the variety and quality of content, the relevance of the topics, and the opportunity to network with peers. There is already strong anticipation for the next South West Education Day, building on the momentum of this outstanding event.
