The award-winning Club Manager speaks about the value of CPD, including opportunities provided by the Advanced Management Programme.
Newport Golf Club’s Rhys Morgan places a high value on continuing professional development (CPD) for himself and his team.
Rhys received the prestigious Club Manager of the Year accolade at the Wales Golf Awards in March, in recognition of the substantial progress made at Newport since his arrival in early 2024.
Beginning his career as an Assistant Golf Professional at Machynys Golf Club, Rhys has built a diverse and impressive CV. Over a decade at the South Wales venue, he held several key roles — including Golf Shop Manager, Golf Services Manager, and Golf Operations Manager — eventually advancing to Director of Golf and Senior Resort Manager.
His first appointment as a Club Manager was at Pennard Golf Club, where he spent six successful years before taking up his current role at Newport.
Throughout that journey he has made CPD a priority, and has recently taken the opportunity to attend several courses within the the Advanced Management Programme.
“I’m passionate about CPD and see education as a vital aspect of being able to do my job to the best of my ability,” he said.
“I’m have been very engaged with the GCMA’s education offering and have attended courses on Golf Course Management for Golf Club Managers, Health & Safety, and Mental Health & Resilience.
“I encourage my entire team to invest in their development. At Newport, we’re currently supporting our Course Manager through his HND, our Food & Beverage Manager has attended specialised training courses, and our PGA Professionals are actively engaged in CPD.
“My own passion for CPD is very much supported by the club and we are big on investing in our people.”
Rhys shared credit for his success at the Wales Golf Awards with his team, whose efforts under his stewardship have seen the club increase green fee income while making notable improvements to the overall experience at Newport.
