Professional Development Manager Gareth Morgan discusses the Advanced Management’s Programme’s Health and Safety Management Certificate, delivered in Oxford earlier this month.
It was very apparent from early on that all the delegates undertaking the Health and Safety Management Certificate harboured a genuine desire to use the three days together to upskill themselves in what is a vitally important area.
We knew from their pre-course information that the delegates may have had quite different career histories and widely varying levels of responsibility regarding health and safety within those careers, but their eagerness to learn was striking.
While some delegates had specific concerns about their club’s existing arrangements and were seeking guidance on areas for improvement, others felt more assured about their practices but wanted the credibility of formal training to support that assertion.

The trainers delivering the course stuck to the criteria of the IOSH Managing Safely Certificate, with delegates able to achieve this qualification after the three-day workshop, a final exam and a short workplace assignment.
It was brilliant to see how well the trainers and delegates worked together to ensure that the fundamentals of the IOSH certificate were discussed and absorbed in a context that was relevant for the role of a Golf Club Manager.
We found the learning did not finish at 5 o’clock every day and delegates took the opportunity to relax and dine together in the evening. This social interaction element is a great added-value feature of our Advanced Management Programme Certificate courses, where matters pertaining to the day’s learning and so much more besides are discussed.
I’d like to say a big ‘well done’ to the delegates for the way they engaged with this course, working together with the trainers to ensure it was interactive and informative, sharing case studies to bring added relevance, and having discussions outside of the classroom to truly get the most out of the whole experience.
– Gareth Morgan, Professional Development Manager
“I found the course extremely useful and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to my fellow peers. I felt the course was highly appropriate in terms of its practical relevance to our daily working situations. Furthermore being able to discuss situations that were pertinent to all the delegates added an extra dimension.” – Toby Morgan, General Manager, Three Rivers Golf Club
“An all-round fantastic course to strengthen your overall knowledge of your club’s health and safety legal requirements. Health and safety is often a taboo subject, but attending the course highlighted that making sure everyone is safe in the workplace is not rocket science and can be done by anyone if they follow the simple steps and guidance outlined during the three days of education. I am now far more confident to take on health and safety at my club to ensure my team have a safe environment to work in and it has removed my perception of health and safety being an overly complex and a never-ending task.” – Rhys Morgan, General Manager, Newport Golf Club
“I really enjoyed the Health and Safety Management Certificate and would highly recommend it. It provided a step-by-step guide to risk assessments and I understand it can’t be tailored completely to the golf industry because it is an internationally recognised qualification (IOSH Managing Safely), but to be in a room of people all from similar backgrounds was highly beneficial. I’d definitely encourage others in the industry to attend!” – Claire Docker, GCMA Accredited Level 1, General Manager, Robin Hood Golf Club
“Even after being in the Job for over 12 years, I found this course extremely beneficial. The course provides invaluable knowledge on risk assessments, legal responsibilities, and best practices to prevent workplace accidents. As GMs we play an important role in adopting a culture of safety, protecting both employees and members while minimising business risks, which can be a scary responsibility. After the course I feel more confident in identifying hazards and being able to put in place procedures and compliance with safety regulations which will safeguard the club, directors, and the overall reputation of the business.” – Sue Elliott, General Manager, Filton Golf Club
